YMCA, Oakland A'S, KPMG Launch San Jose Baseball Camp Program

SAN JOSE, July 26, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- South Valley Family YMCA, the Oakland A's, and KPMG LLP are teaming up to bring a baseball camp to underserved youth in San Jose.

The first of what is expected to be an annual baseball camp will be held July 29 – Aug 1 at Almaden Elementary School in San Jose for 45-50 YMCA boys and girls ages 10-12.

"The support of KPMG and the Oakland A's enables us to create extraordinary experiences for kids who otherwise might not have this opportunity. Our campers will learn the fundamentals of a great game and take away great memories," said Rick Valdez, executive director of South Valley Family YMCA.

"The Oakland A's are excited to partner with South Valley Family YMCA and KPMG to support this new program," said Michael Crowley, President, Oakland A's. "We're looking forward to the opportunity to work with such deserving San Jose youth."

"KPMG volunteers are looking forward to working with the kids, the Oakland A's and South Valley Family YMCA to make the camp a rewarding experience," said Tim Zanni, KPMG Silicon Valley Managing Partner. "We strive to give back to our community and this is one small way we can do that."

The camp will be directed by Dave Henderson Baseball instructor Mike Murphey, who will lead a team featuring former Oakland A's players Greg Cadaret and Shooty Babbit, as well as Dave Henderson Baseball instructor Fielding Snow, YMCA instructors, and 50 KPMG volunteers. The campers will learn throwing, catching, infield techniques, and hitting. They also will be outfitted with A's T-shirts and caps, and they'll get a visit from Stomper, the A's mascot, on Tuesday.
