Speakers include Alasdair Conn, MD, chief, Department of Emergency Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital; Paul Biddinger, MD, director of operations for Emergency Medicine and medical director for emergency preparedness, Massachusetts General Hospital; and Ross D. Zafonte, DO, chief of physical medicine and rehabilitation, Massachusetts General Hospital. Event moderator is Dmitry Nepomnayshy, MD, FACS, senior general and bariatric surgeon, Lahey Hospital.
"Surgical Precision" Takes on New Meaning
Within two minutes of the first bomb blast at the Boston Marathon finish line on April 15, Dr. Conn was notified by Boston emergency authorities. As MGH prepared to receive its first wave of survivors needing trauma care, it activated its disaster response system. In all, 27 hospitals within Boston and the surrounding area became treatment centers for the more than 260 injured. "This extraordinarily rapid and effective response, which saved many lives, did not 'just happen,'" O'Brien said. "We're telling that incredible story at our Sept. 11 event."
