MANCHESTER, NH--(Marketwired - Oct 15, 2013) - Newforma, a project information management (PIM) software company integrating people, projects and processes to transform building and infrastructure project delivery, today announced its participation in the 18th Annual Canstruction® Boston design/build competition, in which Greater Boston area architecture, engineering, and construction firms build sculptures made of canned food. All entries represent the theme "Movies and Cinema." Newforma's entry, modeled after the Marvel Entertainment character Iron Man, is titled "Iron Can."
Newforma's Iron Can combines Masonite, steel, and vegetables into one hunger-fighting, super-heroic metaphor. Eighth-inch Masonite sheets stabilize each layer of cans. Nuts and washers on quarter-inch threaded rods compress the Masonite layers, holding every four levels snug so that no evil can befall the structure. The threaded rods exist in an unseen realm: an interior wall of cans.
Canstruction sculptures were built October 12 at BSA Space, in the Atlantic Wharf Building, 290 Congress Street, where they remain on display through November 1. Upon dismantling the sculptures, all canned goods are donated to the Merrimack Valley Food Bank of Lowell, Mass. All participants and their structures may be seen at the Canstruction Boston Facebook page, bit.ly/CanstructionBoston2013. The public is invited to vote on the People's Choice Award here: http://tinyurl.com/YourFavCAN13/.
Since its inception, 10 million pounds of food have been donated to area food banks. Last year, Canstruction Boston raised 54,651 pounds of food, which equated to 71,046 meals. The event, a brainchild of the Society for Design Administration, is sponsored this year by the SDA, the Boston Society of Architects, Atlantic Wharf, and The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company.
Newforma thanks The Home Depot of 12 Coliseum Ave., Nashua, N.H., for the use of a lumber cart to transport heavy items into BSA Space, and AlphaGraphics of 8 Perimeter Rd., Manchester, N.H., for preparing can placement templates.
Newforma is participating alongside a number of Boston-area customers, including ADD Inc; Cambridge Seven Associates; EYP Architecture & Engineering; Gensler; Integrated Design Group; LeMessurier Consultants; Margulies Perruzzi Architects; Payette; Steffian Bradley Architects; Simpson Gumpertz & Heger; Shepley Bulfinch; TRO Jung|Brannen; and Tsoi/Kobus & Associates.
Newforma Cofounder and Executive Vice President of Strategy Bob Batcheler said the Canstruction competition illustrates all the components of a typical design and construction industry project. "We worked from a program dictated by the needs of our 'client,'" Batcheler said. "We held a charrette of sorts to determine which design to build. We used Revit to design the structure and schedule the materials required. And we developed safety standards to enforce on-site during construction. In these and many other respects, it gave people who work in our software company a taste of what our customers do every day on a much larger scale."
