VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Oct. 17, 2013) - Premier Christy Clark and British Columbia Achievement Foundation Chair Keith Mitchell are pleased to announce the recipients of the Annual Carter Wosk BC Creative Achievement Awards for Art and Design and the BC Creative Achievement Award of Distinction.
"This year's award recipients demonstrate remarkable creativity, originality and energetic entrepreneurship," said Premier Clark. "Their applied art and design skills help to make British Columbia's creative industries among the best in North America."
Distinguished ceramic artist Wayne Ngan was named the recipient of the BC Creative Achievement Award of Distinction. This award celebrates Wayne's significant and sustained contribution to the field of pottery in British Columbia. Mr. Ngan was selected by the board of the British Columbia Achievement Foundation.
The recipients of the juried awards, the 2013 Carter Wosk Creative Achievement Awards for Applied Art and Design, are:
- Idar Bergseth, Victoria - Jewellery
- Stefanie Dueck, Vancouver - Metalwork
- Lisa Fraser, Surrey - Industrial Design
The awards will be presented later this Fall at a formal ceremony at Shaw Studios in Vancouver.
The Creative Achievement Awards honour B.C. artists whose work is judged to be innovative, original and creative while having a practical function," Mitchell said. "The recipients this year include emerging artists and designers in the early stages of their careers and those who have been applying their talents and skills for some time and have been internationally recognized."
The 2013 jury included Sam Carter, professor emeritus at Emily Carr University of Art and Design; Doug Coupland, one of Canada's major creative contributors; Patricia Fieldwalker, fashion designer and 2007 BC Creative Achievement Award for Applied Art and Design recipient and Allan Collier, design curator and historian.
The Carter Wosk British Columbia Creative Achievement Awards for Applied Art and Design are named in honour of B.C. philanthropist, academic and visionary Dr. Yosef Wosk, whose financial support makes these awards possible and for Sam Carter, B.C. educator, designer and curator.

2013 BC Creative Achievement Award of Distinction
Wayne Ngan is renowned as a potter whose abstract and contemporary works reflect the traditions of pottery from China, Korea and Japan and the dynamic influence of the natural surroundings of the Westcoast. Regarded as one of Canada's most influential ceramicists, Wayne received the Saidye Bronfman award in 1983. His work has been exhibited widely for over five decades and is in a number of permanent collections including in the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

Idar Bergseth, Victoria
Jewellery
Idar has been practising his art of designing and producing jewellery for more than 50 years. His work is wide ranging in subject and treatment, from his Summer Rings hand forged in gold and accented with diamonds and other precious gemstones to unique handmade pieces commissioned by such organizations as the Royal Ontario Museum. He has received numerous awards, including, most recently, the first Canadian store to win INSTORE Magazine's award for "America's Coolest Store."
Stefanie Dueck, Vancouver
Metal
Stefanie Dueck is a blacksmith specializing in decorative flatwear. A graduate of the Kootenay School of the Arts in Nelson, Stefanie perfected her craft of metalwork with a blacksmithing apprenticeship in Southern Spain. She works in a variety of metals including stainless steel, copper and bronze using such techniques as lost-wax casting, welding and hot forging steel. She opened her Vancouver studio in 2008 and her work is now shown in stores and galleries across the continent.
Lisa Fraser, Surrey
Industrial Design
Trained in fine arts, Lisa discovered industrial design while studying at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, from which she received a Bachelor of Design in 2010. Lisa has designed and launched Snug Vest, an innovative product that assists those who suffer from autism and other sensory disorders through the application of controlled pressure in a technique known as Deep Pressure Therapy. Lisa manufactures and markets her products from her Vancouver location. Lisa has received numerous awards including the Red Dot Design Award in Life Sciences.
