DEARBORN, MI--(Marketwired - Oct 24, 2013) - Beginning with Oktoberfest, residents at Oakwood Common in Dearborn received dining passports to begin a year-long journey to different countries, including the U.S., without leaving the comforts of home.
"Many of our residents are well traveled," said Steve Berry, manager of the dining program at Oakwood Common. "This passport program gives everyone an opportunity to join us as we bring new foods and cultures from each destination directly to our dining rooms."
Residents are invited to attend a planned dinner event held each month and bring their passports to have them stamped with the featured destination. Everyone who attends each of the 12 different events during the year becomes eligible to win prizes. First prize is a dinner for four that will be planned by the winner with Oakwood Common's Executive Chef Pearse Tormey and held in a private setting.
Chef Tormey shared details of Travel the World's first event -- a celebration of Oktoberfest with a special dinner of traditional German fare that included a choice of two entrees of chicken breast wrapped with bacon and a grape Riesling sauce, or sauerbraten with dill mashed potatoes and cabbage. Accordion player Tom Brown entertained residents during the dinner.
"It's a very festive occasion," said Chef Tormey. "We also create other breakfast, lunch and dinner specials that carry each month's theme and are available in our dining rooms and Bistro café."
In addition, as Halloween approaches, Tormey will plan to add some pumpkin favorites to the menu including chocolate pumpkin cake, pumpkin bars with oatmeal crust and possibly pumpkin ice cream.
Other destinations that residents can look forward to during the new 12-month dining journey include Scandinavia, Mexico, China, Ireland, Holland, Africa and the Caribbean.
