FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Dec. 10, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- JDL Technologies today announced it is providing additional support for the Florida Student Astronaut Challenge, joining NASA and Coaxis International as a premier Mission Control Sponsor. In October, JDL Technologies employees helped proctor the regional exams, in which 55 Florida high school teams participated.
The Florida Student Astronaut Challenge is a unique opportunity for high school students to engage in a competition focused on aerospace science. In addition to Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, Science is a central element of STEM education, a U.S. Department of Education mandate that is being executed by individual school districts around the country. STEM education will enable future generations of highly skilled workers to lead the U.S. successfully in the competitive global arena, where STEM disciplines are increasingly vital.
The Florida Student Astronaut Challenge sponsorships will enable 13 teams of Florida high school students to compete in three final events from March 7 to 9, 2014 at the Kennedy Space Center. First, second and third place awards will be given in each event, with the state trophy to be awarded to the top-scoring team from all three events.
The Florida Student Astronaut Challenge is especially compelling for its focus on STEM and education technology, according to Scott Fluegge, President and General Manager of JDL Technologies.
"JDL Technologies is a long-standing proponent of education technology," said Fluegge. "We recently installed wireless networks throughout Miami-Dade, and JDL manages the network operations center for Broward County, respectively the fourth- and sixth-largest public school systems in the U.S. Wireless networks are vital to the new education technology initiatives that promote BYOD on campus as well as anytime/anywhere learning."
In further support of the company's commitment to education technology, JDL will participate in the Florida Education Technology Conference (FETC) in Orlando January 28 to 31, 2014. FETC provides a forum for educators and administrators to explore the integration of technology across the curriculum—from kindergarten to college—through hands-on exposure to the latest hardware, software, IT solutions, and successful education technology strategies.
