Tubby's Sub Shops Help Customers Keep New Year's Resolutions

ROSEVILLE, MI--(Marketwired - Jan 27, 2014) - "Lettuce help you," is an easy play on words for "Lettuce Builders," new menu items recently introduced by Tubby's Sub Shops, www.tubbysgrilled.com.

Lettuce Builders include wedges of lettuce that customers fill with grilled chicken, veggies and a choice of zesty sauces -- Szechuan, Teriyaki and Sweet Chili.

The idea for the new menu items came from Peggy Paganes, wife of Tubby's CEO Robert Paganes, who joins her husband and daughters three or four times a week to eat at one of Tubby's Sub Shops.

"I love our food and the quality is great," said Peggy Paganes. "Yet, I think I'm like a lot of people, who want to watch the amount of carbs we eat. Instead of selecting a bun, lettuce is a great, healthy substitute."

Robert Paganes agreed to his wife's suggestion, and the new items are catching on quickly among customers, including individuals who made New Year's resolutions to watch their calorie intake. The Szechuan Lettuce Builder kit includes 240 calories, Teriyaki 290 calories and Sweet Chili kit has the most at 330 calories.

Tubby's has taken its new menu items a step further by offering customers the opportunity to turn any of Tubby's popular subs, such as Steak N' Cheese, into a Lettuce Builder by exchanging the bun for lettuce.

A few months ago, Tubby's introduced gluten-free buns for customers who are allergic to or have a low tolerance for gluten. Staff were carefully trained in how to prepare gluten-free items to ensure that food, utensils, and grill are kept free of any gluten.

"While our basic menu of offering delicious grilled subs has not changed over the years, we've added lots of variety in response to customer requests," said Paganes, who confirmed he's glad he also listened to his wife.
