Secure Designs CTO Ron Culler Heads to D.C. to Advocate for IT Sector

GREENSBORO, NC--(Marketwired - Feb 11, 2014) - This week, Ron Culler, chief technology officer at managed network security services company Secure Designs Inc, joins TechVoice to advocate for IT sector priorities on Capitol Hill during the organization's annual fly-in to Washington, D.C. Culler is co-chair of the North Carolina chapter of TechVoice, a partnership of CompTIA and the Technology Councils of North America (TECNA), works to provide a voice to tech companies on Capitol Hill.

As a TechVoice participant, Ron Culler meets with North Carolina Senators, Sen. Richard Burr and Sen. Kay Hagan, as well as Congressional representative Rep. David Price (4^th District) and local representative Rep. Howard Coble (6^th District) to focus their attention on policies that support patent reform, develop skills for the 21^st century workforce, champion the SMB tech entrepreneur, lead in secure Internet-based platform technologies, and support new and emerging technology platforms.

"Tech sector innovation is a key force behind a strong 21^st century economy and, Congress should prioritize issues that affect small and mid-size tech businesses," said Culler. "These issues include patent reform to counter abusive patent litigation tactics by so-called 'patent trolls,' ensuring tax reform is fair to tech SMBs; and immigration reform that includes making it easier to recruit and retain the 'best and the brightest' of high-tech workers in an effort to close the skills gap and remain globally competitive."

Secure Designs will focus in particular on lobbying for national-level legislation providing standard rules and guidelines to guide businesses on what to do in the event of a data breach. Currently, there is no consistency from state to state as to what local legislation requires, or whether it exists at all

"We are urging Senators and Congressmen to put a National Data Breach and Privacy Notification law in place," said Culler. "Small businesses as well as retail giants need a standard set of rules on what to do if a data breach occurs, so that they can protect themselves and their consumers, regardless of the state they live in. Under the existing piecemeal system, if your customers buy from you but live in another state you need to adhere to two different sets of laws. It doesn't make sense, and we trust that our meetings this week will help to set some resolution in train."
