Brown College to Host Series of Events for National Court Reporting and Captioning Week

ATLANTA, GA--(Marketwired - Feb 11, 2014) -  Brown College of Court Reporting, a leader in the field of court reporting with a national reputation for excellence, is pleased to announce that it will host an open house, guest speakers, webinars, games, and giveaways to commemorate National Court Reporting and Captioning Week, which is being held from Sunday, February 16 through Saturday, February 22. Throughout the week, Brown College will welcome back alumni and other successful court reporters and captioners who can provide advice and guidance to students about finding a job after graduation. An open house will be held on Saturday, February 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. that will inform prospective students about the benefits of receiving an education in court reporting and captioning.

"Court reporting and captioning does not require a traditional four-year degree, so our students can enter the workforce as soon as possible. However, court reporting students must have the drive and self-motivation to develop this essential skill for the legal profession," said Marita Carey, director of Brown College of Court Reporting. "Our students have several career options to choose from including court reporting, live-event captioning for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, and captioning for broadcast and specialized videography."

• Bill Abel, CCR, RPR, Owner of Appalachian Court Reporting
• Caryn Broome, CCR, CVR, President of the Georgia Certified Court Reporters Association; Owner of CMB Reporting Services
• Melanie Fisher, CCR, RPR, RMR, CRR, Vice President of Georgia Shorthand Reporters Association
• Cheryl Gilliam, CCR, RPR, RMR, President of the Georgia Shorthand Reporters Association
• Alison Jordan, Official reporter at Cobb County Superior Court, will be speaking at the open house on Saturday, February 22
• Kerry McFadden, CCR, RPR, Treasurer of the Georgia Shorthand Reporters Association
• Dianne Parnell, CCR, RPR, Director of Georgia Shorthand Reporters Association
• Representatives from Brown College of Court Reporting's advisory board

There will also be a contest in which the student who can type the fastest in a designated period of time will win a prize. Other activities include interactive "Grammar Jam" games, door prizes, and giveaways. A social gathering with alumni, staff, and other certified court reporters will be held at Uncle Julio's restaurant, located at 1860 Peachtree Road NW, Atlanta. 

The Department of Labor projects that through 2020, the demand for court reporters is expected to grow 14 percent. Additionally, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary as of 2010 for Court Reporters is $47,710, while the top 10 percent earn more than $91,280 annually. Brown College has been the starting point for many successful court reporters since it was founded in 1972, providing students with skills that are in high demand and result in a high placement rate. The strong marketplace demand means court reporting offers an abundance of long-term career opportunities.
