NORTHFIELD, Vt., Feb. 13, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Norwich University will be the premier title sponsor of the 2014 JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl, a nationally recognized academic competition and leadership skills event created exclusively for Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) students.
College Options Foundation (COF) will organize and implement the event, which is open to more than 200,000 students from around the world. The event will test JROTC students' knowledge of English, math, science, leadership and current events.
The online competition, open to high school JROTC students of all military branches, uses SAT-type challenges to test academic and leadership skills in a multi-level competition with national finals held online in April 2014.
Participating students learn the value of citizenship, academic competition, leadership and a college education. They represent many geographic and socio-economic backgrounds. The competition began in Nov. 2013 with 3,237 teams of six cadets participating in the first round. Level II of the online competition begins March 1.
"As birthplace of ROTC, this is a natural fit for Norwich University," said Frank Vanecek, vice president of student life and enrollment management. "We are thrilled to support these amazing students as they challenge themselves and demonstrate leadership in these vibrant competitions."
"We are delighted that Norwich University has selected to support this program and these bright, motivated students," said Terry Wilfong, College Options Foundation president. "In this day and age of such a challenging economy and high dropout rates, it is critical to give students all the tools needed to succeed in college. These students work and study very hard to compete and win; they are leaders and mentors in their schools."
All competition participants have free access to COF's Total College Success program for college entrance exam (SAT, ACT) preparation, as well as for admissions, financial aid, scholarships, selection and overall college success.
