HORSHAM, PA--(Marketwired - Feb 26, 2014) - Tinius Olsen, whose materials testing solutions already include a wide range of extensometers for highly accurate measurement of strain and deflection, has added several new models that are automatic variable gage length. The AE300 and AE500 are suitable for nearly all samples with an initial gauge length from 10 mm; low clamping forces combined with high measurement accuracy make them ideal for even small, notch sensitive test samples. In fact, very low clamping forces allow testing of foils and thin wires. Tinius Olsen's AE series can be connected to partly or fully automatic testing machines (specifically, electromechanical and hydraulic tension and compression) and used with all types of grips. They deliver two-sided measurement by means of four measuring sensors. When used with Tinius Olsen's model MFQ, the AE extensometers are useful for testing deep-drawing properties of thin sheets. Accuracy is to ISO 9513 Class 0.5 and ASTM E83 Class B1 capable.
Each of the four measuring arms of the AE models has a measuring spring bonded with a full bridge strain gauge. The measuring springs of a right and left arm pair are connected in parallel to obtain an average value, which is important if the sample deforms non-homogenously. DC motors compensate the changes in the measuring spring signal. Elongation is recorded by an opto-incremental measuring system. A zero-backlash linear guidance system, and mounting of the measuring heads on the parallel arms, helps avoid potential errors.
System control is through Tinius Olsen's Horizon software via RS232 or USB connection. Horizon features a test routine library, simultaneous multiple machine control, extensive editing capability, and multilayered security. All movements can be initiated easily at any time required. Measuring arms can be positioned in parallel without the available interval under computer control and quickly adjusted symmetrically to different sample lengths. Tinius Olsen offers several options: measurement in compression or deflection, different lengths of measuring arms, higher travel, and installation of a fan/ventilator for dusty environments.
