New Patent Awarded to TRC for Environmental Remediation Solution

LOWELL, MA--(Marketwired - Apr 1, 2014) - TRC Companies, Inc. (NYSE: TRR) has been awarded a new patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to support additional features in its cap design that prevents releases of liquid coal tar in sediment at former manufactured gas plant (MGP) sites, and petroleum and other non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL) from other contaminated sediment sites. While conventional sediment caps only delay eventual contaminant releases, TRC's cap designs stop NAPL migration and safely vent the gas to the atmosphere providing a green, sustainable solution for remediation projects.

This patent is the second in a series of TRC applications covering cap designs for managing gas and contaminant releases at sediment sites. It allows for additional flexibility to accommodate a variety of site geometries and provide treatment of both NAPL and dissolved-phase impacts.

Three full-scale applications of this design have already been constructed for TRC's utility clients. The cap is currently being used at a site in Ann Arbor, Michigan on the Huron River, at a site in Bangor, Maine on the Penobscot River, and at a site in Ripon, Wisconsin on Silver Creek.
