When Are Implants Needed For a Breast Lift? Huntsville Plastic Surgeon Explains

HUNTSVILLE, AL--(Marketwired - Apr 9, 2014) -  According to Huntsville plastic surgeon Dr. David Durst, women who are seeking a breast lift (mastopexy) often have their breasts augmented, as well. He explains that while some patients request to have breast implants placed as part of their procedure, he also tends to recommend an implant if the patient's breast tissue volume is low. Dr. Durst says patients who simply want a lift, but do not want to significantly enlarge the size of their breasts, can often still achieve a very natural look from a small implant, if needed.

Dr. Durst recently addressed how this issue affects women after childbirth in a recent blog post, titled "Breast Lift After Baby: Will I Need Implants?" In the post, Dr. Durst explains that mothers typically wait a few years after having children before they decide to have a mastopexy procedure. He notes it is important for the patient to wait until after they've had their last child, since he typically advises against pregnancy after a breast lift has been completed. He explains that although some women can achieve a lifted look without an implant, he generally uses an implant to create the look his patient desires.

Although Dr. Durst says many patients simply want to create a firmer, more youthful appearance to their breasts, he notes that some women wish to significantly increase the size of their breasts as part of their procedure. He says in this situation, he usually completes the breast lift surgery first, allows it to heal, then has the patient return a few months later to complete the breast augmentation.

In some rare cases, Dr. Durst explains that a patient may be able to accomplish their goal of a "lifted" appearance simply by using a shaped or textured implant. He reminds patients that this is not a common occurrence, but if it can work, the patient should be able to avoid the need for a full breast lift.
