SANTA CLARA, CA--(Marketwired - Apr 16, 2014) - Lilee Systems, the leading provider of advanced wired and wireless communications products, solutions and services for the transportation industry, today announced that the new 802.15.4p Rail Communications and Control (RRC) standard was approved by the IEEE-SA Standards Board on March 27, 2014. The IEEE 802.15.4p RRC Task Group, founded and chaired by Lilee Systems' Vice President of Strategic Development Jon Adams, developed the baseline for wireless links between trains or locomotives and track infrastructure, creating the framework for locomotive and transit communication standards.
Adams will moderate the closing plenary session "Integrating Systems and Accelerating Development" at PTC World Congress, April 15-17. He will also participate in the session panel "Developing a Long Term Plan to Ensure Technological Interoperability and Open Standards for PTC."
"Standards development can be a challenging matter but, by bringing together competitors and opposing entities into a cohesive, collaborative team we have made significant progress in establishing a standardized approach for a variety of challenges in the rail and rail transit industry," said Adams. "We are extremely pleased that working together, the IEEE 802.15.4p Task Group successfully established a definitive standard for wireless systems that supports the networked communications necessary to ensure that trains do not exceed limits authority or exceed speed restrictions. Our hope is that these standards will evolve to encompass communication to bridges, overpasses or other infrastructure that can impact the safety of fast-moving trains and transit vehicles."
The IEEE 802.15.4p Task Group has 90 participants from more than 70 organizations worldwide including US Class 1 railroads, rail and transit systems integrators, U.S. agencies Federal Rail Administration (FRA), Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and Department of Transportation (DOT), and transportation agencies in other regions of the world. It was chartered to expand the very successful existing IEEE 802.15.4p standard to include sensor, control, and information transfer applications for rail transit entities.
Norman Y. Mineta, former United States Secretary of Transportation, and board director for Lilee Systems, highlights the importance of establishing communication standards for the locomotive and transit industry: "We are at the crossroads of a new revolution in transit safety. The IEEE 802.15.4p Task Group took on a critical initiative by facilitating collaboration among diverse interests. I'm very enthusiastic about the new levels of safety that will undoubtedly be produced as a result of the new communication standard."
