NEW YORK, April 21, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- More than 400 Chicago students will come together this weekend for the Race Against Hunger—a unique service-learning initiative that unites students from around the world in the fight against hunger. The Race Against Hunger is a multi-faceted service learning initiative run by Action Against Hunger, a global nonprofit that combats deadly malnutrition in more than 40 countries.
For the second year in a row, Action Against Hunger and the Chicago After-School All-Stars have partnered together for the Race Against Hunger. Some 400 students representing ten Chicago public schools will join together for a celebratory race and fun, educational activities in Gage Park.
The Race Against Hunger events will be held in conjunction with Chicago Youth Service Day, the afternoon of which will feature a rally for hundreds of students and their families at Grant Park, celebrating a collective commitment to service and peace in Chicago.
In a world with the capacity to feed twice its current population, 52 million children suffer from acute malnutrition. Although we have the means and knowledge to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease, the global rate of acute malnutrition has fallen just 11 percent in the past 25 years. Action Against Hunger is changing that, one life-saving program at a time.
"We're thrilled to be back in Chicago this weekend for the Race Against Hunger," said Ryan Head, Community Outreach Officer for Action Against Hunger. "The students' energy and enthusiasm is so strong, and we can't wait to harness it to help save the lives of malnourished children around the world."

ABOUT THE RACE AGAINST HUNGER:
The Race Against Hunger is a Service Learning initiative that unites middle and high school students in the fight against global hunger and malnutrition. The Race's educational component involves an interactive program on global hunger that teachers can implement in the classroom. The initiative offers engaging opportunities for physical activity through the awareness campaign's "fun-run" event. Students seek sponsors for the race and the fundraising proceeds directly support Action Against Hunger's life-saving programs.
