Smart Card Alliance to Commemorate Federal Government Security Directive HSPD-12 With 10th Anniversary Celebration

PRINCETON JUNCTION, N.J., April 28, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Smart Card Alliance invites government and industry executives to a special event commemorating the 10th anniversary of landmark security directive HSPD-121 this summer in Washington, D.C. The one-day event will feature government leaders and current heads of federal agencies looking back on identity and access security achievements of the past decade, as well as forward to opportunities for future advancements.

The "Government Conference Special Edition Event: Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of HSPD-12," held with support from FICAM2 and the Interagency Advisory Board (IAB), will take place on July 31, 2014 at the Marriott Metro Center Hotel in Washington, D.C. "This event celebrates the passage of HSPD-12 as the moment when the federal government took the lead to develop a secure, interoperable identity credentialing and access management solution," said Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance. "This initiative has had far-reaching impacts on the way organizations of all types approach identity management and security and, as a result, many non-federal and commercial organizations today are looking at ways to leverage the proven, standards-based framework for their own identity and access credentialing solutions."

The event commemorates the government-wide security directive signed by President George W. Bush in August 2004, which drove momentous change in the way the U.S. federal government manages employee and contractor identities and access to government facilities. HSPD-12 and the resulting FIPS 201 standard established practices for verifying identities and issuing secure, reliable and tamper-proof PIV3 credentials that could be rapidly authenticated electronically across government. Today, nearly 5 million smart card-based PIV credentials have been issued to government employees and contractors for secure access to government buildings and IT systems, and the standards have been extended for non-federal and commercial use.

"HSPD-12 presented the important vision of government-wide use of credentials that are trusted and interoperable. Since then, the federal government has been hard at work to not only carry out this vision, but progress beyond it – extending trusted identity solutions beyond the federal government and moving forward with developing more secure, privacy-enhancing and efficient identity solutions for our increasingly interconnected online environment," said Deb Gallagher, director, Identity Assurance and Trusted Access Division, Office of Governmentwide Policy, General Services Administration.

The event program will include speakers reviewing and celebrating identity credentialing and access security advances over the past decade, as well as looking at future developments in policy and evolving standards for PIV credentials including their use on mobile devices and cloud systems. In addition to the main program, a small identity management and access control vendor showcase will be held to allow government attendees to visit and learn more about the security products and services that HSPD-12 has fostered in the government market.

The "Government Conference Special Edition Event: Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of HSPD-12," is free of charge to federal government employees who have a PIV card or Common Access Card (CAC). Registration is also open for a fee to non-federal government attendees.
