Founded in 2009 by Ricardo Salinas Pliego, Esperanza Azteca is a social project operated by Fundación Azteca, destined to help underprivileged children between the ages of five through 17. Since formed, it has more than 60 youth orchestras in Mexico, two in El Salvador and this year the first US-based orchestra in Los Angeles. In addition to imparting a rigorous education and love of music, the program seeks to instill other life-changing lessons including the values of teamwork, dedication, discipline, self-esteem and passion.
Esperanza Azteca Youth Orchestra will also be performing the following night at a benefit concert supporting the Hispanic Federation's educational programs. The event will take place on Tuesday, May 13 at 7 p.m. at El Museo del Barrio, New York's leading Latino cultural institution. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Hispanic Federation's educational programs which serve the New York Latino community. Vital programs like Pathways to Academic Excellence focus on early childhood education, college preparation and parental involvement. The seminar series gives parents the tools necessary to enhance their children's early literacy skills through language-building activities and exercises, and teaches parents the importance of preparing for their children's college education.
