The FALA conference and trade show will feature speakers, exhibitors and many of the newest ALF industry trends. With roughly 10,000 baby boomers retiring every day -- and 70 percent of them eventually requiring long-term care -- such events are increasing in importance, says Peder Johnsen, CEO of Concordis Senior Living.
"Eventually, we're going to experience a tidal wave of seniors who are either seeking or requiring the kind of lifestyle or long-term care that you can only receive at an assisted living facility," says Johnsen, a third-generation ALF operator whose family pioneered the contemporary congregate community model.
"It can be quite expensive, although high cost doesn't necessarily make for happier residents."
The median cost for a semi-private nursing home bed is $77,000 a year, he says; in contrast, the median price for a private, one-bed home in an ALF community is $42,000.
"Someone who needs some assistance with day-to-day living tends to be happiest when in a good assisted-living community with an atmosphere that reminds them of their former home," he says. "It all depends on the needs and preferences of the individual; that's why a customized care plan is designed for every Concordis resident prior to move-in."
