CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - Jul 10, 2014) - The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN®) has launched the "Professional Boundaries in Nursing" video, which can be viewed at www.ncsbn.org/2930.htm, to explain the continuum of professional behavior and the consequences of boundary crossings, boundary violations and professional sexual misconduct.
Year after year, nursing consistently tops national polls of the most widely respected and trusted professions. The results of these polls reflect the special relationship and bond between nurses and those under their care. Patients can expect a nurse to act in their best interests and to respect their dignity. This means that a nurse abstains from attaining personal gain at the patient's expense and refrains from inappropriate involvement in the patient's personal relationships. In order to maintain that trust and practice in a manner consistent with professional standards, nurses should be knowledgeable regarding professional boundaries and work to establish and maintain those boundaries.
In addition to this new video, NCSBN provides a variety of resources that can educate nurses about professional boundaries. A companion piece to the video is the updated "Professional Boundaries in Nursing" CE course. This course reinforces the nurse's responsibility for establishing and maintaining professional boundaries in the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship and the consequences of boundary crossings, boundary violations and professional sexual misconduct. The cost is $30 for a three-week subscription; 3.0 contact hours are approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing and are awarded upon successful completion of the course.
