HARTFORD, Conn., July 21, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Connecticut Children's Medical Center will hold a webinar on the surgical and medical management of Posterior Urethral Valves on Thursday, July 24 from 12:15 – 1:15 PM. The webinar will be presented by Eric D. Nelson, MD of the Division of Urology.
Posterior urethral valves are the most common cause of urethral obstruction in a male child. It has significant effects on the development of upper urinary tracts and in the evolution of urinary bladder function. The effect on the kidneys and the urinary bladder persists even after the successful management of the obstructing valves which is why a multidisciplinary approach is so important to the child's long term outcome.
The webinar is designed to help physicians better understand the prenatal and postnatal care for boys with posterior urethral valves and will include:
- A case study illustrating key indicators for an accurate diagnoses of the condition
- Pre and Postnatal care interventions and management options
- Discussion of clinical contacts and long-term considerations for these patients

About Dr. Nelson:
Eric Nelson, MD, joined the Division of Urology at Connecticut Children's Medical Center in August 2011. Dr. Nelson comes to Connecticut Children's from Texas Children's Hospital-Baylor College of Medicine where he completed his fellowship in pediatric urology. He received his bachelor's degree in biology from Tufts University and his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his surgical and urology residencies at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Nelson treats the entire spectrum of pediatric urology, but has a special interest in pediatric stone disease and voiding dysfunction. Dr. Nelson is the site director for the University of Connecticut Urology Residency program.
