Unitron Group, Entropic Develop World's Most Advanced Digital Channel Stacking Switch (dCSS) Multi-Switch Solution

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, Sept. 12, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- (IBC, Entropic Meeting Suite G106/G107; Hall 13) -- Entropic (Nasdaq:ENTR), a world leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected home, today announced Unitron Group selected Entropic's EN5520 second-generation digital Channel Stacking Switch (dCSS) solution for Unitron's latest Multi-switch solution.

After evaluating various dCSS solutions in the market, Unitron chose the Entropic EN5520 solution as it offered the lowest power dissipation at less than two watts, which equates to approximately one-half the power of competitive solutions. Additionally the EN5520 IC offers a cost-optimized package with an advanced feature set, which includes 32 User Bands and dual outputs for end product flexibility on a single integrated circuit (IC) design. This enables one IC for use across multiple applications, reducing Unitron's Multi-switch development time and allowing products to enter the market faster.

"After careful review and consideration Unitron selected Entropic's EN5520 to service our end customer base as Entropic has a proven track record in the overall CSS space – both as the global leader in analog CSS technologies and as the only Company with a dCSS solution in deployment today," said Willy Lamaire, CEO, Unitron Group. "Further, we were impressed with Entropic's EN5520 dCSS solution, which we believe is the premier choice for Tier-1 service operators due to its low power, rich feature set, small size, and design flexibility."

Unitron plans to develop a family of Multi-switch offerings, which include 4, 8 and 16 output designs, based on Entropic's EN5520 IC. Each output will provide up to 32 user bands to support more tuner/demodulators off a single-cable architecture. These designs support direct broadcast satellite (DBS) operator's migration to gateway/client architectures and deliver more High Definition (HD) entertainment to the home.

"In working with Unitron we are able to help operators more rapidly transition to a server/client architecture," said Al Servati, vice president, Marketing, Entropic. "In this scenario, a large multi-tuner/demodulator 'server' set-top box can easily be fed by our second-generation single-cable digital CSS solution, the EN5520. This 'server' set-top device can then feed content to client or low cost set-top boxes across multiple viewing locations to provide lower overall Subscriber Acquisition Costs. This architecture gives operators more flexibility to offer advanced services such as Home Networking (via MoCA®) and video on demand."
