Can You Handle the Truth? Interactive, International Art Project, In Search of the Truth, Makes First Bay Area Appearance at Bowman International School

Public Exhibition, Saturday, September 20, 1:00 - 6:00 p.m.

PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwired - Sep 18, 2014) - Bowman International School, an innovative Montessori school serving K-8th grade students in Palo Alto, Calif., will host the first Bay Area appearance of the interactive, international art project, In Search of the Truth, on Saturday, September 20, from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. at 4000 Terman Drive. The public is invited to participate in this collaborative project designed to initiate cross-cultural communication through use of "The Truth Booth" -- an iconic 17 foot high, 25 foot long, portable video recording studio shaped like a giant cartoon speech bubble with the word 'TRUTH' boldly printed on the side. The interior is designed for someone to sit down and have two minutes to video record their opinions and thoughts as they finish the statement: "The truth is..."

"The In Search of the Truth project places the audience into the piece of art, letting them speak and define themselves," said Jim Ricks, one of the Cause Collective artists who created the project. "This is collaborative art where the artist and audience work together -- the piece is started, someone sees it, is drawn to it and then helps to create it. We've exhibited and recorded people from around the globe and, while it is important to see and hear the individuals, it is also amazing to notice the common human factors in everyone, no matter their location, status, age or gender."

Since launching in 2011, In Search of the Truth has traveled to such diverse areas as Ireland, Afghanistan, New York, Washington D.C. and Virginia, recording responses from thousands of people. In Search of the Truth was originally commissioned by the Arts Council of Ireland and the San Francisco Foundation, along with the Cause Collective trio of artists Ryan Alexiev, Jim Ricks and Hank Willis Thomas, as a way to explore and enliven public spaces by creating video portraits that give a voice to a diverse range of people from around the world.

"In Search of the Truth is a unique way of incorporating the arts and humanities to help students, families and the public better understand each other and the world around them, and be reminded how the truth gives everyone something in common," said Mary Beth Ricks, Head of School at Bowman International School. "This project embodies our school's Montessori principles that teach the importance of being global citizens and providing an internationally aware program that promotes respect, responsibility and independence where students can learn how to positively impact the world. We look forward to hearing our students, families and community members answer the question and become part of this global art project."
