DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Oct. 6, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- As the 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track season comes to a close this weekend in Southern California, several of the sport's elite competitors will be fighting for contingency money that has been graciously offered up by sponsors of the series.
The $15,000 Sunoco "Go the Distance Award" will go to the riders that complete the furthest distance in their respective classes. So far, it's Jared Mees at the helm in Grand National Championship competition with 457.44 miles ridden so far. However, Jake Johnson is right on his tail with 457.35 miles heading into the Flat Track Finals at the LA County Fairplex in Pomona, Calif., this Saturday, Oct. 11. If Mees wraps up the award this weekend, he will receive $4,000, with an additional $6,000 dispersed to the next three spots.
In Pro Singles competition, Bronson Bauman leads the way with 249.93 miles ridden. Bauman would receive $2,000 for his efforts if he's able to close out Pomona with the furthest distance completed.
Thom Duma Fine Jewelers, a family owned and operated jewelry store located in Warren, Ohio, has agreed to grant the 2014 Grand National Champion with a Rolex Daytona Cosmograph valued at over $10,000. After coming in second place at Calistoga a week ago, Jared Mees enters the final round atop the GNC leaderboard. Bryan Smith sits just 13 points back and Jake Johnson only three behind Smith.
Wyatt Maguire appears to have the Saddlemen Rookie of the Year Award all but locked up heading into the season finale. The $5,000 year-end award will go to the eligible rookie rider who earns the most points in the Grand National Championship. Maguire, 23, has had a respectable first season at the elite GNC level, earning six main event appearance and accumulating 35 points. Shayna Texter is the next closest to Maguire with 18 points to her credit.
The $1,000 Cortech Performance Edge Award will go to the GNC rider who recorded the fastest lap in the most races during the 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track season. Kenny Coolbeth and Jared Mees are deadlocked at the top with four each. Both riders are expected to be on their game this weekend at Pomona.
Aside from their single-event contingency payouts, Arai Helmets has also graciously agreed to give money to the class champions at the season's conclusion. The industry-leading helmet manufacturer will pay out a total of $8,000 to the GNC classes, including $5,000 to the Expert champion.
Each award will be granted at the AMA Pro Flat Track yearend banquet this Sunday, Oct. 12, at the Pomona Valley Mining Company following the Flat Track Finals on Saturday, Oct. 11.
