DULLES, VA--(Marketwired - Nov 18, 2014) - SummitIG, a custom network solutions and bandwidth infrastructure provider, announced that it has completed the construction of its 170-mile regional long-haul dark fiber network connecting the greater Richmond area to key points throughout Northern Virginia including Ashburn, the internet traffic hub and data center capital of the US.
As technology advancements continue to drive huge demand for Internet connectivity and data transport, business customers and government agencies face the challenge of managing increasing amounts of information that need to be both highly secure and always available. Northern Virginia and the I-95 corridor have long been home to large enterprises, military, government agencies and academic institutions, and with intensifying focus on cyber security initiatives in the community, this area has been rapidly evolving as a 'cyber highway.'
"We built our original network in Loudoun County as 70% of the world's daily Internet traffic runs through this area. We also recognized that improved infrastructure was needed between Northern Virginia and points south, so we set out to develop and implement a robust solution to meet customer demand," said Bill Cook, chief executive officer, SummitIG. "We are excited to have completed this new regional long-haul network and now offer the most direct route from the Richmond market to Northern Virginia, bypassing Washington, D.C. This is the only all dark fiber network between these markets."
The existing carrier routes between Richmond and Northern Virginia are limited, aging and support only lit services. SummitIG's route runs directly within Virginia Department of Transportation's limited access corridors, including I-295, I-95, Route 234, I-66, and Route 28, making it unique and completely diverse from the current network infrastructure. Additionally, SummitIG has built two dedicated collocation shelters, at Quantico Corporate Center at Stafford, and Ruther Glen, for customers to utilize for their optical equipment to terminate or regenerate the signal. The entire 170-mile span extends from key points in Northern Virginia including Ashburn, Reston and Manassas, to Fredericksburg, and on to the Richmond metro where it continues east and south along I-295 to the Petersburg area. This strategic dark fiber infrastructure is an ideal solution for customers requiring latency sensitive applications such as asynchronous storage environments, critical cloud platforms and business continuity solutions. Furthermore, the route is well positioned to support the mobile backhaul market, which is currently being underserved by fiber along the entire corridor.
"Our regional long-haul route is 100% underground and provides network diversity that large enterprises, carriers and government agencies are demanding," said Sunny Kumar, chief commercial officer, SummitIG. "This new dark fiber infrastructure is purpose built to reduce the distance from current routes by up to 25%, giving customers network alternatives with better performance, security and scalability. We are excited to make dark fiber services available between these markets and unlock new value for business customers."
