MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwired - Mar 23, 2015) - The FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) Alliance (https://www.fidoalliance.org/), an industry consortium launched in 2013 to revolutionize online security with open standards for simpler, stronger authentication, today announced the first deployment of FIDO authentication for the healthcare industry. FIDO Alliance members MedImpact Healthcare Systems and Nok Nok Labs announced in other news today that MedImpact's Physician Access® Portal will deploy FIDO authentication using Nok Nok Labs' S3 Authentication Suite to enable authorized healthcare providers to login with a supported fingerprint reader, instead of a password. Physician Access Portal is a solution for busy healthcare providers who need fast, secure, convenient access to a patient's full prescription history. Following this initial pilot development, up to 50 million users will eventually be enabled to use FIDO authentication when they access their healthcare portal.
"This commitment to deployment of FIDO authentication is another strategic milestone for the emerging FIDO ecosystem and for the healthcare industry," said FIDO Alliance executive director Brett McDowell. "We congratulate MedImpact and Nok Nok Labs on their successful collaboration, and for delivering the first reported deployment of FIDO authentication to an industry where secure, private, easy-to-use authentication is critical to healthcare providers and their patients everywhere. We expect more deployments of FIDO authentication in healthcare and other industries, now that FIDO 1.0 standards are available and implemented by many authentication products and services."
"MedImpact strives to be first in supporting healthcare with leading innovations that advance the whole industry. FIDO authentication promises to revolutionize our industry and enable it to move forward quickly with compliance measures that protect the privacy of patients, while providing secure information directly to their providers," said John Treiman, Senior Vice Present and Chief Information Officer at MedImpact. "FIDO authentication assures member privacy when their providers login to our Physician Access Portal with technology that is also easier to use than passwords."
"Nok Nok Labs is delighted to work with MedImpact to enable FIDO-based authentication to support their customers," said Ramesh Kesanupalli, Founder, Nok Nok Labs and FIDO Visionary, "The healthcare industry has specific concerns around patient privacy as well as simplifying online access to patient records. As an innovator in this space, MedImpact is delivering this security without increasing the burden on their customers through its adoption of FIDO authentication."
FIDO 1.0 standards were published in December 2014. FIDO Ready™ products are available for immediate deployment of FIDO technology.
About The FIDO Alliance
The FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) Alliance, www.fidoalliance.org, was formed in July 2012 to address the lack of interoperability among strong authentication technologies, and remedy the problems users face with creating and remembering multiple usernames and passwords. The FIDO Alliance is changing the nature of authentication with standards for simpler, stronger authentication that define an open, scalable, interoperable set of mechanisms that reduce reliance on passwords. FIDO authentication is stronger, private, and easier to use when authenticating to online services.
