HOOVER, Ala., June 3, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A father who started a school safety foundation after his daughter died in a school shooting will provide a keynote address at the upcoming conference of the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO). John-Michael Keyes, executive director of the "I Love U Guys Foundation," will speak during the closing general session of NASRO's 25th annual School Safety Conference, which takes place July 5-10, 2015 at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, Florida. The Florida Association of School Resource Officers (FASRO) will host the conference.
Keyes created the I Love U Guys Foundation in memory of his daughter, Emily, who was killed by a gunman at Platte Canyon High School in Bailey, Colorado, September 27, 2006. The shooting followed an hours-long hostage situation to which multiple agencies responded and which involved multiple female students. The tragedy drove Keyes to create the foundation and develop a school safety program that is quickly becoming a standard around the country.
"Mr. Keyes' presentation about his family's personal tragedy and the work that resulted is very compelling," said NASRO executive director Mo Canady. "He combines humor and heart in his presentation, as he discusses how improbable, 'black swan' events can be both negative and positive."
Last year, 800 people attended the annual NASRO conference, including school resource officers (SROs) and other law enforcement officers, as well as school security and safety officials, school board members, administrators and others interested in school safety.
The conference offers attendees an opportunity to receive 30 hours of training; visit an exhibit hall with the latest in products, technology and innovations; complete on-site NASRO training courses at no additional charge; and interact with SROs, school administrators, sheriffs and chiefs of police from throughout the country and world.
