TOKYO and PLANTATION, Fla. and HONG KONG, June 29, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- TradeStation, a Monex Group company (Monex Group, Inc. is listed on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, code: 8698) and an award-winning broker-dealer and futures commission merchant, today announced results of the "Monex Global Retail Investor Survey, Vol. 17." The survey found that U.S. investors who use the TradeStation online platform have no plans to slow their trading activity despite lower expectations for global and domestic equities.
Results of the online survey, which was conducted in June 2015, show that these U.S. investors' perception of the global equities markets cooled during the second quarter of 2015. Thirty-five percent of U.S. survey respondents expect global stocks to gain ground in third quarter of 2015, down from 52% in the previous survey in March 2015. Those who expect the global equities markets to remain flat over the next three months jumped to 40%, from 23% in March.
Despite that downturn in sentiment, these investors apparently do not intend to decrease their trading activity. When asked about expectations for their own trading volume over the next 12 months, 61% said they expect to increase their trading volume, up from 53% in the March survey.
As for expectations for U.S. equities and the U.S. dollar, 58% of those surveyed expect U.S. stocks to outperform stocks in Europe/U.K., Asia (excluding Japan) and Japan in the third quarter of 2015 – down from 60% in March. Fifty-six percent expect the U.S. dollar to strengthen the most of any currency over the next three months, down from 68% in March.
"The survey results show that a solid majority of TradeStation clients plan to increase their trading volume over the next 12 months," said Salomon Sredni, CEO of TradeStation Group, Inc. and COO of Monex Group, Inc. "Uncertain markets present unique challenges, and we at TradeStation are focused on developing trading and analytical tools that can help our clients meet these challenges."
These investors continue to find China the most attractive overseas market outside the U.S., with 35% of those surveyed saying that China remains poised for the strongest GDP growth of all markets outside the U.S. in 2015. Moreover, the results suggest these investors may be looking toward other Asian markets for opportunities. The percentage who said the U.K./EU region is poised for the strongest GDP growth to occur in the next 12 months dropped from 28% in the March survey to 14% in June.
Options/futures, ETFs and stocks remain the investment vehicles of choice, with 72%, 58% and 58%, respectively, of those surveyed saying these instruments present attractive opportunities in 2015. Technology and healthcare again topped the list of favored market sectors, with roughly seven of ten survey respondents expecting these areas to experience gains over the next three months.
As for changes in Federal Reserve Bank monetary policy, a solid majority of survey respondents (60%) expect the Fed to begin raising interest rates in 2015, though more than half of that majority do not expect the Fed to take action until the fourth quarter of 2015.
Monex has been conducting its monthly retail investor survey with its Japanese clients since October 2009.
