Zetta.net Issued Patents for Fast Direct-to-Cloud Backup and DRaaS Technologies

Patents Focused on Optimizing Efficiency and Performance to Rapidly Transfer Large Datasets to the Cloud Without an Appliance

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwired - Jun 30, 2015) - Zetta.net today announced the issuance of four patents by the US Patent Office that covers systems and methods for delivering fast direct-to-cloud backup and Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS). The four patents optimize the efficiency and performance for faster cloud backup, recovery and DRaaS directly to/from the cloud.

The four patents cover some of the systems and methods behind Zetta.net's approach to delivering faster direct-to-cloud backup, disaster recovery and DRaaS. The technologies are designed to optimize the backup and recovery efficiency and performance allowing for the rapid transfer of large volume datasets over the Internet without the need of an appliance or staging drive.

"We sought to design a better backup and recovery solution by developing WAN-optimized technologies and capabilities that are purpose-built to take advantage of cloud," says Chris Schin, Vice President of Products at Zetta.net. "These patents validate our direct-to-cloud approach which enables customers to simplify backups, lower overall costs and allow for faster, more efficient backups and recoveries.

Patents for Faster Direct-to-Cloud Backup, DR and DRaaS Capabilities

  • Patent 8,977,594 for state consistent replication: This patent defines how the initial dataset is replicated in its native file format to a virtual volume creating a mirror copy of customer data in the cloud, making recoveries easier via a mounted drive, web browser or local storage.
  • Patent 8,977,596 is for backup using locally distributed change detection: Local signature caching contains a manifest of the file system. This provides the ability to compare the current state of the local data against the server-side data, without having to traverse the network to detect changed files allowing for rapid change detection.
  • Patent 9,015,122 is for minimizing network bandwidth for replication/backup: Sub-file changed block detection is used to determine the blocks that change within a file and then patch those changes into the existing version of the file in order to transmit the least amount of data possible when a file does change.
  • Patent 8,977,598 is for online backup and disaster recovery with local copy: This patent provides the ability to store a local copy of the replicated data, and use that local copy as the basis for restores; restoring to a cloud-based version involves patching only the data differences between that version and the local copy, minimizing network traffic for rapid recovery.
