AIHA Releases New Consumer Fact Sheet on Formaldehyde

AIHA has released a new formaldehyde fact sheet for consumers who may have questions about formaldehyde emissions in their homes.

FALLS CHURCH, Va., July 16, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The American Industrial Hygiene Association® (AIHA) announces the release of a new educational document focused on formaldehyde, specifically formaldehyde emissions from laminate flooring. The document, Formaldehyde: Is It a Problem in My Home?, was created by AIHA's Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) Committee Task Force on laminate flooring formaldehyde outgassing.

With recent heightened media attention and pending litigation surrounding potential formaldehyde emissions from laminate flooring produced in China, this document provides practical information for consumers.

The fact sheet serves as a resource for consumers who suspect that formaldehyde emissions from laminate flooring in their home may be a danger. AIHA's IEQ Committee states, "This guide is intended to help you decide if you want to investigate a possible indoor formaldehyde problem that you suspect is attributable to laminate flooring."

The document provides information about:

  • what formaldehyde is and its common sources in indoor air
  • possible health concerns in its usage in laminate flooring
  • what can be done if laminate flooring is subject to formaldehyde outgassing
  • additional resources about formaldehyde and laminate flooring

This document is now part of AIHA's Formaldehyde Resource Center.
