SANTA CLARA, CA--(Marketwired - Aug 10, 2015) - The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) and its Solid State Storage Initiative (SSSI) have announced the formation of a new Data Recovery/Erase Special Interest Group (DR/E SIG) to accelerate awareness and adoption of this technology in the solid state storage marketplace.
The DR/E SIG's first public activities will take place at Flash Memory Summit, August 10-13, 2015 in Santa Clara, CA.
"SSDs present particular challenges when trying to erase all data or attempting to recover data from a nonoperational drive," said Scott Holewinski of Gillware Data Recovery and Chair, Data Recovery/Erase SIG. "The DR/E SIG provides a forum in which solution providers and solid state storage manufacturers can collaborate to enable data recovery and erase capabilities in solid state storage in such a way as to ensure that customer demands for these services can be met in a cost-effective and timely manner with a high likelihood of success."
The Data Recovery/Erase Special Interest Group will focus on the following:
- Building the business case to support the need for effective data recovery and erase capabilities on solid state technology by using use cases and real examples from end users with these needs.
- Creating a feedback loop allowing data recovery providers to provide failure information to manufacturers in order to improve product design.
- Fostering cooperation between solid state manufacturers and data recovery and erase providers to determine what information is necessary to improve capabilities.
- Protecting sensitive intellectual property shared between data recovery and erase providers and solid state storage manufacturers.
- Working with standards bodies to ensure future revisions of their specifications account for capabilities necessary to enable data recovery and erase functionality on solid state storage.
- Collaborating with solid state storage manufacturers to incorporate capabilities needed to perform data recovery and erase in product design for future device models.
At Flash Memory Summit, the DR/E SIG will speak at a SNIA Solid State Storage Initiative Reception on August 10th and participate in a Data Recovery of SSDs session on August 12th. On August 12th and 13th in the Expo area, (booth #820), the DR/E SIG will discuss their goals and plans to include key stakeholders in the DR/E SIG, including data recovery and erase solution providers, solid stage storage device manufacturers, and solid state storage consumers.
"SSDs wouldn't be as far along as they are today without the efforts of SNIA's Solid State Storage Initiative," said Jim Handy, General Director at Objective Analysis. "The SSSI has rapidly developed important test and NVM programming standards and have brought companies together to focus on important issues like NVDIMM and SSD data recovery, while establishing itself as the central source for solid state storage knowledge and education. SSSI programs help users to understand and evaluate solid state storage technology to benefit their computing centers with its enormous price/performance advantages."
