NEW YORK, Sept. 30, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- New York's only Relais & Chateaux hotel, The Surrey, Cornelia Spa and beauty brand, and Watch!, the glossy magazine published by the CBS Television Network, have joined together to sponsor the first ever "Evening at the Surrey," a salon featuring best selling author Kate Betts. The event, an intimate gathering in the hotel's presidential suite, will include a Q &A with Betts, whose new book My Paris Dream: An Education in Style, Slang, and Seduction in the Great City on the Seine. Betts will talk about style, her career working up the ranks of the fashion industry, and getting her start in Paris, where she rose to become the associate bureau chief for Fairchild Publications. Betts has gone on to forge a successful career in magazines, books and fashion. She will share her experiences with guests of the salon on Wednesday, October 7th at The Surrey, in a discussion moderated by journalist and editor Rebecca Ascher Walsh.
Betts, an award-winning magazine editor and bestselling author, has held top positions at two of the worlds most successful fashion magazines, Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. In 2003, she was named editor at large at Time magazine where she created the first globally published style supplement, Time Style & Design. She also authored the critically acclaimed book Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style. Betts was the subject of the Lifetime documentary, "Putting Baby to Bed: Wife, Mother, and Editor in Chief," about her experience as the youngest editor in the history of Harper's Bazaar. Before that, she was the fashion news director of Vogue. Betts was recently named one of the top 10 fashion editors by Forbes magazine and was the 2011 recipient of the Mary Lou Luther Award for excellence in fashion journalism. She has written for more than 20 publications including The New York Times, Glamour, New York, Elle, and Travel + Leisure, in addition to serving as a fashion editor for CBS Watch Magazine.
"The Surrey is proud to sponsor this speaker series with Kate Betts as our first special guest," said Troy Pade, general manager of the hotel. "This program is designed to bring together the most creative minds in literature, fashion, wellness, beauty, and culture, and create a salon-like environment where guests can hear them talk intimately, and join in on the conversation."
"The salon cultural speaker series is a continuation of the Cornelia's Experts In Residence series, and it's a component of the brand's vision to integrate culture within the spa from the perspective that wellness starts in the mind," said Ellen Sackoff, principal owner of the Cornelia brand, whose spa is located in The Surrey. "We could not be more honored than to have Kate Betts as our first speaker at Evenings at The Surrey. We hope these discussions enlighten and engage as well as encourage a dialogue with our speakers. Having a healthy, curious mind is one of the hallmarks of achieving wellness."
"It's not often you get to hear guests of this caliber speak and share stories in such an intimate environment," said Jeremy Murphy, General Manager and Editor in Chief, CBS Watch Magazine. "Our goal is to create an atmosphere where guests feel free to engage with our speakers, and share their own thoughts, opinions and ideas. The Surrey, Cornelia and Watch magazine each strive to create lasting memories, and we think having meaningful conversations with thought leaders and taste makers is a rare, unique opportunity guests will find exciting and memorable."
