SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 12, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- I Love APIs 2015 — Apigee®, developer of an intelligent API platform, today launched Apigee Health APIx, a new software solution that assists healthcare providers in accelerating the development and delivery of digital services based on FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) APIs. Built on the Apigee Edge API management platform, Apigee Health APIx features FHIR APIs and a healthcare developer portal to help hospitals meet the demand for data interoperability, deliver patient-centric healthcare, and move faster to the digital world. This represents the first of several industry-specific API solutions from Apigee.
“APIs are the underlying connectors of our digital world and can accelerate innovation in nearly every industry,” said Chet Kapoor, CEO of Apigee. “With this new solution for healthcare providers, we are leveraging our core competencies in APIs to address a gap in the industry, enabling healthcare providers to move faster toward delivering on the promise of digital health -- open, personalized and consumer-driven.”
FHIR is a draft standard that describes data formats and APIs for exchanging electronic health records to enable healthcare companies to securely share data with each other and mobile apps and meet certification guidelines set by the U.S. government. Project Argonaut is a private sector initiative aimed at advancing the adoption of modern, open interoperability standards in healthcare using the FHIR standard.
"Rising customer expectations, technology advances, and new policies are opening up opportunities in the healthcare industry, but there’s a need to remove the barriers that stifle innovation,” said Aashima Gupta, Apigee vice president, digital transformation - healthcare. “The momentum generated by Project Argonaut and FHIR APIs, as well as the development acceleration possible with Apigee Health APIx, can be catalysts to help healthcare companies innovate faster."
Healthcare companies can experience a number of challenges in delivering new patient-centric digital services: securing resources and budget for innovation projects; working with legacy systems; delays in provisioning new IT infrastructure; and many more. Healthcare stakeholders may not have a clear path to solving these challenges, which limits their ability to share patient data and launch new digital services.
“McKesson is working closely with partners that are accelerating the transition to a value-based world - where innovation and interoperability are essential,” said Matias Klein, vice president of Strategic Growth and Innovation, McKesson Health Solutions. “We’ve aligned with Apigee because we see their approach as offering a significant advancement in capability and one that can support many interoperability initiatives.”
“API-first” solution for digital innovation in healthcare
Apigee Health APIx makes it easier for healthcare providers such as hospitals and clinics to connect with app developers and health data partners to build FHIR API-based digital services. It simplifies and accelerates the interoperability journey by providing APIs that are ready for immediate use as well as cloud computing infrastructure to support internal and external innovation.
This solution is built on Apigee Edge, an enterprise-grade platform for managing, securing and scaling APIs. It provides digital teams, including mobile and web developers, with access to:
- A healthcare-specific developer portal with FHIR API documentation and content
- A new open source project that provides a collection of pre-configured API proxies for 16 FHIR-ready APIs (Patient, Medication, Condition, Claims, and more)
- Pre-integrated OAuth security framework and other key functions
- Reference implementation of leading FHIR-enabled apps
Apigee Health APIx is available immediately as a packaged public cloud offering. For more information about Apigee’s healthcare solutions, please visit https://apigee.com/about/solution/healthcare-api-management.

Additional Supporting Quotes
“Healthcare executives looking to jump start digital health programs can now focus on designing patient and provider-focused applications that extend the value of existing health IT investments,” noted Aneesh Chopra, the former (and first) U.S. Chief Technology Officer and Apigee advisor. “I applaud Apigee’s commitment to build upon industry standards and accelerate adoption through its community of healthcare members.”
“FHIR APIs are good for mobile developers for two reasons,” said Grahame Grieve, Principal at Health Intersections and the original architect of the FHIR API. “In addition to being technically suited – HTTP, JSON, and OAuth – FHIR is more importantly a web-centric framework that is also suited to the needs of existing healthcare systems, so the data silos can be unlocked more cheaply. I’m excited to see Apigee embrace FHIR APIs and support Project Argonaut, and look forward to seeing the industry innovate faster.”
“With the digital health APIs from Apigee, we can make FHIR a practical solution, which is a huge step forward for real-world healthcare data interoperability," said Brian Weiss, CEO of Carebox Healthcare Solutions. “As Carebox plans to be both a client and a server in the Apigee digital health API ecosystem, clinical or claims data would flow automatically from any authorized Apigee-connected FHIR server into Carebox. Any web or mobile application designed to work with Apigee-connected FHIR services could consume Carebox data that originated with Medicare or VA online data, personal health devices, and provider or payer patient portals.”
“Healthcare companies must co-innovate with their partners to create better, more intuitive and integrated experiences for everyone. This starts of course with patients, but extends to doctors and nurses and to labs – every part of the ecosystem. Apigee’s new solution not only facilitates such co-innovation, but also opens up new business models,” said Dr. Anand Deshpande, CEO of Persistent Systems. “Our work with Apigee to help build and support this new and better approach to the healthcare experience is part of our strong focus on the potential digital transformation can unleash on healthcare today.”
