HAWLEY, Pa., Oct. 14, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Sixteen years ago, Bob Kiesendahl (BK), a Leukemia survivor and co-owner of Woodloch Resort located in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, established BK Hope Cures, an organization with the mission to raise awareness and funds in the fight against cancer. On October 4th and 5th, Woodloch Springs Country Club hosted the 16th annual BK Invitational, a charity golf tournament that helped break the $1,000,000 mark for the Hope Cures Foundation. Funds raised by the organization benefit The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, The Lance Armstrong Foundation LIVESTRONG, Endowed Leukemia Research Fund at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
In 1999, Kiesendahl was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Leukemia at the young age of 28. He received treatment and a bone marrow transplant at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. It was during treatment and recovery that the idea for Hope Cures began. Backed by the support of his family, who happen to be the owners of Woodloch Resort, BK Hope Cures has brought cancer awareness to the forefront with its initiatives involving the community. Each year, the Hope Cures Foundation hosts a charity golf tournament (The BK Invitional), a local road race (The BK 5K), and a tricky tray fundraiser (A Night for the Cure). The three BK Hope Cures events held annually foster bonding, generosity, and support among individuals, businesses, and sponsors, in addition to cancer patients, survivors, and their families.
"Sixteen years ago while I was recovering from my personal battle with cancer, I focused on how I could create hope for others faced with the harsh realities of cancer," says Kiesendahl. "I quickly realized that I was fortunate to have my family's business, Woodloch Resort, as a vehicle to drive our efforts along with an incredibly supportive family and strong circle of friends. The combination worked!" He continues, "What started off as a few dedicated friends and family members teaming up for a cause has grown exponentially over the past 16 years. Crossing the $1 million milestone clearly displays the commitment and generosity of others who have supported the 'BK.' It also clearly proves, unfortunately, that we are all impacted by cancer in some way."
With this tremendous achievement, Kiesendahl continues to focus on future endeavors and raising more money for the cause. "I definitely paused for a moment to reflect on all that we have accomplished over the years and the reality of actually raising $1 million to fight cancer! We then quickly refocused on the challenges that are still in front of us. There is optimism, and progress is being made. At the same time, many are still suffering. The ultimate goal is to find the cure!"
