PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwired - Nov 10, 2015) - Solera Health, Inc., a technology-enabled health community integrator for evidence-based chronic disease prevention, today announced that it has partnered with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield to administer its Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) to its entire Anthem membership in Colorado.
Anthem offers a DPP recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help members throughout Colorado to lower their risk of diabetes and enable employers to take charge of diabetes-related health care costs. The program is part of the evidence-based National DPP led by the CDC and supported by the American Medical Association (AMA). Anthem members can now refer themselves to the program after completing a risk assessment or can be recommended by their doctor.
Anthem's yearlong DPP program offers lifestyle health coaching and weekly classes to teach members the skills needed to lose weight, become more physically active and manage stress as part of their daily life. Through the Solera partnership, Anthem members will be able to take classes at community locations, participating employer sites or entirely online through Solera's network of DPP providers. The program is based on a National Institutes of Health trial that demonstrated participants under age 60 reduced their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent, while participants over 60 reduced their risk by 71 percent.
"Currently 86 million Americans are living with prediabetes and more than three quarters of these individuals are not even aware of their conditions and associated consequences," said Mike Ramseier, president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Colorado. "Working with Solera, we now have an integrated approach for arming our at-risk Colorado members with the necessary DPP services and tools to proactively prevent and manage chronic conditions via potentially lifesaving lifestyle modifications."
Anthem's DPP is covered in full as a preventative care benefit for members enrolled in Affordable Care Act (ACA)-compliant plans. Non-ACA compliant plans, such as grandfathered individual or small group plans that were purchased on or before March 23, 2010, may cover preventative care with a member co-pay on some plan designs.
"Solera Health is pleased to align with Anthem to empower at-risk members in Colorado with simple, easy access to the most appropriate community or digital resources for preventive health," said Brenda Schmidt, founder and CEO of Solera Health. "Prediabetes is a serious and growing medical problem in our country. We are proud to work with a forward-thinking organization like Anthem to make its DPP program a success by streamlining the process of DPP referral, consumer choice, member engagement and reimbursement."
