ROAD SCHOLAR OFFERS NEW RESPITE OPPORTUNITY FOR GROWING NUMBER OF BABY BOOMERS AND BEYOND IN THE CAREGIVER ROLE

BOSTON, Nov. 12, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- As the leading nonprofit educational travel organization for adults 50 plus, Road Scholar is pleased to announce its new Caregiver Grants program to provide Boomers and beyond with financial assistance to participate in our U.S.-based educational travel programs. According to Caregiving in the United States 2015, published by the AARP Public Policy Institute and the National Alliance for Caregiving, nearly 1 in 10 caregivers in the U.S., or over 3 million adults, is now 75 years of age or older.

Not-for-profit Road Scholar has been dedicated to making the benefits of lifelong learning accessible to all older adults for 40 years. Road Scholar participants report that they benefit from our unique combination of study, travel, and friendship – a combination that is especially helpful for caregivers experiencing isolation and feelings of depression, stress and anxiety.

Thanks to a Road Scholar Caregiver Grant, 70-year-old Dessa S. recently returned from a learning adventure in Minnesota, Lake Superior from Historic Naniboujou Lodge: Fur Trade History, Culture Walks. As a caregiver to her adult daughter fighting the final stages of multiple sclerosis, the quiet beauty of Lake Superior provided a much-needed respite to Dessa.
 
"My daughter said, 'You have to go and be my eyes,' " Dessa says. "I came back energized to be with my daughter on her journey – our journey. This experience was very life giving to me and life giving to her."
