OMAHA, Neb., Nov. 19, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In keeping with a long-standing tradition of community involvement, Nebraska Methodist College nursing students are hosting a Thanksgiving Health Fair and Family Feed at McMillan Magnet Middle School.
The event will take place on Tuesday, November 24. All students and their immediate families are invited to this special event, as are residents of the nearby community. In addition to providing all attendees with a hearty meal for Thanksgiving (courtesy of Just Good Meats), the fair will feature a full roster of activities. These include a bounce house, face painting, a DJ, Zumba instruction and more.
A variety of healthcare organizations, law enforcement agencies and community support groups will also have representatives on hand to meet with families and answer questions.
Lindsey Mittelbrun, nursing student at Nebraska Methodist College and one of those responsible for putting on the health fair, explains the value of hosting this event.
"No family should have to spend a holiday such as Thanksgiving wondering where their next meal will come from," said Lindsey. "We are hoping to provide access to these wonderful services not only to the families of attending McMillan students but to the surrounding community as well."
The Mobile Diabetes Center will be available to provide health screenings and flu shots to anyone interested, while McMillan middle schoolers, with the assistance of NMC's own nursing students, will offer entertaining community health presentations at booths placed throughout the event.
"Our future nurses have done a remarkable job working with McMillan students in the lead-up to the health fair," said Echo Perlman, MSN, Nursing Instructor at Nebraska Methodist College. "With the holiday right around the corner, there could be no better time to bring people together and really focus on how to improve health not just from person to person, but at the community-wide level."
The Thanksgiving Health Fair and Family Feed will run from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM on November 24. Students, their families, and residents of the McMillan community can learn about health, eat a meal and even take food home for the Thanksgiving holiday. Donations are being accepted until Tuesday afternoon.
