Azul Cosmetic Surgery Set to Sponsor a Medical Student for Four Years of College Through the University of Michigan Medical School

FT. MYERS, Fla., Dec. 03, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With the cost of a college education skyrocketing in the U.S., many students are finding it difficult to get a quality education. This is even more true in specialties such as the medical field. The average cost of one year in medical school is now $51,044, and many students report graduating with heavy student loan debt to repay. To help out with this growing problem, Azul Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Spa of Ft. Myers, Florida is now involved in a sponsorship program with the University of Michigan to help pay for these costs.

Kristen Flaharty, Director of Marketing at Azul, comments, “The primary physician at our practice, Dr. Patrick Flaharty, is a graduate of the University of Michigan and that’s why he chose this school. He truly believes in higher education for anyone who wants it, and we’re all very excited to be involved in this University of Michigan sponsorship program. We believe it will change the life of at least one person and that’s just an amazing concept.”

Azul Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Spa is a major provider of quality skin care treatments and cosmetic surgery in the South Florida area. Dr. Flaharty has pioneered numerous revolutionary treatments for issues such as acne scars, premature aging, CoolSculpting, dermal fillers and Sculptra Facial Injectable, among others. His staff is highly trained to give patients the very best in skin care treatments. They strive to help patients look and feel their best.

Kristen adds, “We’ve seen people come into our office feeling terrible about the way they look, and after just a few treatments, their demeanor changes and they suddenly feel confident. It’s so incredible to be a part of changing someone’s life. We feel that assisting the next generation of medical practitioners is not only another way to do that, it’s also something we can do to give back to the community.”

The medical industry has grown tremendously in the past twenty years, largely due to an aging population. The average person in America spends a little over $9,000 each year on health care. In 2012 alone, the cost of health care was $2.8 trillion, and well-trained doctors are a must for the future. In a recent interview, Robert Kocher of the Brookings Institution and Peter Bach of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center said that they both believe medical school should be free to students. Their plan to make this happen includes suspending stipends for students who are in specialty training programs. Their research concluded that specialists generally earn almost twice what a primary care doctor earns.

Kristen concludes by saying, “Until our society can find a way to make medical school affordable for anyone who wants it, sponsorship programs are the best way to go. We hope our involvement will encourage others to get behind this effort.”
