Dstillery's Take on How Valentine's Day Gift-Giving Reflects Hot Button Political Issues

Interesting Trends Emerge When Historical Gift-Giving Behavior Is Used to Predict Political Positions on Abortion, Same-Sex Marriage and Gun Control

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - February 08, 2016) -  Ever wonder what pro-lifers, supporters of same-sex marriage or pro-gun activists would be gifting loved ones on Valentine's Day? Well look no further. Dstillery, a trailblazer in big data intelligence, analyzed historical online behavior and hot button political issues, and the gift-giving trends were surprising. The results are detailed in a new infographic (http://dstillery.com/love-and-politics/) and you can easily Tweet the infographic by visiting http://ctt.ec/BkT90.

"February is not only politically charged with debates, caucuses and primaries, but it is also the month of love," said Tom Phillips, CEO of Dstillery. "We did some digging and what we learned about gift-giving on Valentine's Day is quite revealing, and another illustration of our ability to help media buyers and marketers find their audiences based on online and offline behaviors."

To create the infographic, Dstillery's data science team looked at buying behavior for eight Valentine's Day gifts: chocolates, plush toys, gift cards, flowers, perfume, cards, jewelry and dinner reservations. They then analyzed political sites relevant to the current election cycle, relating to guns, same-sex marriage, immigration, abortion, equal pay, voting reform, climate change and healthcare.

When they indexed the political views for each of the gift-giving domains, some interesting trends emerged. Some were expected; a few surprised the team.

  • Same-sex marriage supporters and their foes are on opposite sides of who should be exchanging wedding vows, but they both have a strong affinity for a romantic Valentine's Day dinner.
  • Sweet may not be the first adjective one chooses to describe gun rights supporters, but chocolates are their preferred gift on February 14th.
  • Plush toys are a favorite gift among both gun control advocates and pro-lifers. Who knew?
