BARRIE, ON--(Marketwired - March 25, 2016) - PowerStream is making progress as the utility works to restore service to approximately 18,000 customers who remain without power in Simcoe County due to freezing rain, which occurred Thursday night and into early Friday morning.
Freezing rain with ice accumulation, combined with wind, resulted in fallen trees and branches on powerlines. This, along with a loss of supply from Hydro One, caused more than 32,000 customers to be without power at the height of the storm.
More than 11,500 are still without power in New Tecumseth from a combination of a loss of supply from Hydro One and damaged trees being in contact with powerlines. Hydro One and PowerStream are removing trees and branches from the lines and effecting repairs as needed.
Also in Barrie, more than 6,500 customers remain without power due to trees being in contact with powerlines. Crews continue to effect repairs throughout that municipality as well.
PowerStream anticipates service being restored to all remaining customers by early this afternoon.
The utility brought in more crews late last night to bolster the company's restoration efforts. Now, in the light of day, PowerStream linemen are able to work more quickly and safely to restore power service.
In the meantime, those who remain without power are encouraged to remain patient and to check on relatives and neighbours who may require assistance.
Customers are also encouraged to call 1-877-963-6900, visit www.powerstream.ca or follow @PowerStreamNews on Twitter for the latest updates on the company's power restoration efforts in Simcoe County.
