GoFundMe: Over $300,000 Raised to Help Victims of Fire in Fort McMurray

REDWOOD CITY, CALIFORNIA--(Marketwired - May 9, 2016) - On May 1st, 2016, a fire began in Alberta, destroying homes and businesses, ravaging entire communities, and displacing roughly 88,000 people. Over the last few days, the GoFundMe community has donated over $300,000 to help thousands of individuals and families impacted by this fire.

The GoFundMe community has a history of coming together when natural disasters strike. Just last month, the GoFundMe community raised over $1.4 million for victims of the Ecuador earthquake. Campaign organizers raised $7 million on GoFundMe in the aftermath of the Nepal earthquakes, $2.5 million for the 2015 California wildfires, and over $1.1 million for the storms in the Carolinas this past year.

"This fire is wreaking havoc across entire communities, upending families, and displacing tens of thousands of individuals. The GoFundMe community is stepping up and lending a helping hand to those in need," said Rob Solomon, GoFundMe CEO. "We encourage the GoFundMe community to continue to support everyone affected by this devastating fire."
