HOOVER, Ala. , May 26, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Presentations at a national school safety conference will focus on global threats to Western education posed by today's terrorist organizations and indicators of homegrown violent extremism and mobilization. Experts in the two topics will speak at the National Association of School Resource Officers’ (NASRO) school safety conference in Anaheim, California, in July.
U.S. Justice Department Supervisory Special Agent John Callery — a specialist in global counterterrorism — will lead a two-hour session on preparing for terrorist attacks in schools. A certified instructor who has more than 24 years of experience, Callery has dedicated his career to understanding terrorist tactics and helping educators and law enforcement agencies plan for violent threats to school safety. He holds a master’s degree in counterterrorism, serves on the board of directors of the Center for Advanced Defense Studies and is co-author of the soon-to-be-released reference book, “Stemming the Tide of School Violence, in a Realistic Manner.”
An expert from the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), who prefers not to be identified, will provide a separate briefing that includes a discussion of the evolution of the homegrown violent extremist phenomenon, how public safety personnel are positioned to identify pre-attack signposts and indicators, and the appropriate use of the NCTC’s new booklet on homegrown violent extremist mobilization indicators.
NASRO’s 26th annual global conference takes place July 10-15 at Disneyland Resort. The conference provides education and networking opportunities to school resource officers (SROs) and other law enforcement officers, as well as school security and safety officials, school board members, administrators and anyone interested in school safety.
The deadline for discounted conference registration is May 31. Registration fees increase by $50 June 1. The deadline to reserve hotel rooms at a special group rate is June 9.
