BOSTON, Sept. 6, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The National Patient Safety Foundation's Lucian Leape Institute has announced the speakers and agenda for its 9th annual Forum and Keynote Dinner to be held on Thursday, September 15, 2016, at the Westin Waterfront Hotel in Boston.
Pamela Cipriano, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, president of the American Nurses Association (ANA), is to give the evening keynote address. Dr. Cipriano is the 35th president of ANA, the nation's largest nurses organization representing the interests of the 3.4 million registered nurses. A distinguished nursing leader, she has held executive positions in health care systems, academia, and national professional organizations. Last month, she was recognized by Modern Healthcare magazine on its 2016 list of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare.
The afternoon forum will feature Prof. Charles Vincent, professor of psychology at University of Oxford; Emeritus Professor, Clinical Safety Research at Imperial College, London; and former director of the National Institute of Health Research Centre for Patient Safety & Service Quality at Imperial College Healthcare Trust. Prof. Vincent, a member of the NPSF Lucian Leape Institute, is widely recognized in the patient safety field for his research into the causes of harm to patients, consequences for patients and staff, and methods of improving the safety of health care. His most recent book, Safer Healthcare: Strategies for the Real World, is available free as an e-book from Springer.

In addition to Prof. Vincent's presentation, the afternoon program will feature breakout sessions during which attendees will explore obstacles to creating safe cultures in health care. The evening program begins with a networking session, followed by dinner and Dr. Cipriano's address, entitled "Culture of Safety—A Conscious Choice."
The meeting's emphasis on culture reflects the current focus of the Institute. "One result of the Institute's work is that we have come to recognize how important a culture focused on safety is to making serious and lasting improvement in patient safety," said Gary S. Kaplan, MD, FACMPE, chairman and CEO, Virginia Mason Health System in Seattle, and chair of the Institute. "This is an important event for all of us as we share what we have learned and continue the dialog with those in leadership positions and on the front lines of care."
The NPSF Lucian Leape Institute is named for Dr. Lucian Leape, a renowned leader of the patient safety movement.
