Elsevier Announces Third eBook in Library Learning Trends Series

Free digital-only volumes support and encourage learning and professional development in library sciences

CAMBRIDGE, MA--(Marketwired - October 13, 2016) - Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the publication of Current Trends in Information Literacy, the third volume in its Library Learning Trends eBook series. The series offers librarians and information resource managers access to free digital volumes that support and encourage learning and professional development in library sciences.

The Library Learning Trends series taps into the knowledge and expertise of authors for Chandos Publishing, the Elsevier imprint covering library and information science (LIS). Each title includes content excerpts focused on a central theme, providing readers with an introduction to new ideas and information on that topic.

Current Trends in Information Literacy is available in PDF format, and contains chapters from five Chandos books:

  • Chapter 1 -- "The Nature of Information Literacy," by Tibor Koltay, Sonja Špiranec and László Karvalics, an excerpt from the book, Research 2.0 and the Future of Information Literacy by Tibor Koltay, Sonja Špiranec and László Karvalics
  • Chapter 2 -- "Critical Thinking and Information Literacy," by Anthony Anderson and Bill Johnston, an excerpt from the book, From Information Literacy to Social Epistemology by Anthony Anderson and Bill Johnston
  • Chapter 3 - "Information Literacy Skills in the Research Process," by Hilde Drivenes Daland and Kari-Mette Walmann Hidle, an excerpt from the book, New Roles for Research Librarians by Hilde Drivenes Daland and Kari-Mette Walmann Hidle
  • Chapter 4 - "Visual literacy meets information literacy," by Mary Snyder Broussard and Judith Schwartz, an excerpt from the book, Skills to Make a Librarian by Dawn Lowe-Wincentsen
  • Chapter 5 - "Science information literacy and the role of academic librarians," by Svetla Baykoucheva, an excerpt from the book, Managing Scientific Information and Research Data by Svetla Baykoucheva.

Elsevier previously announced two other volumes in the series, Facing Contemporary Challenges in Librarianship, and Marketing the Academic Library.

All of the Chandos LIS books are available on the Elsevier Store and on ScienceDirect, Elsevier's full-text scientific database offering journal articles and book chapters from over 2,500 peer-reviewed journals and more than 35,000 book titles.

In order to meet content needs in library and information science, Elsevier uses proprietary tools to identify the gaps in coverage of the topics. Editorial teams strategically fill those gaps with content written by key influencers in the field, giving students, faculty and researchers the content they need to answer challenging questions and improve outcomes. These new books, which will educate the next generation of librarians and resource managers, are key examples of how Elsevier is enabling science to drive innovation.
