Today at the Los Angeles Autoshow, Volkswagen unveiled an upgraded version of its all-electric family car, the e-Golf. Thanks to a new lithium-ion battery, energy capacity has been increased by almost 50 percent from 24.2 to 35.8 kWh, resulting in a driving range of up to 200 kilometres or more on a single charge. Range in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) is up to 300 km. The electric motor itself also delivers more power and torque than the previous version, improving on-road performance and acceleration, while maintaining the same level of efficiency.
The big news for Canadians is that the e-Golf will be available at Volkswagen Dealerships beginning in mid-2017.
This is Volkswagen Canada's first all-electric vehicle, one that delivers emissions-free driving in a fun-to-drive package based upon a proven design. To date, over 33 million Golf models have been sold over its 40+ year history, hundreds of thousands of them right here in Canada.
The e-Golf will be the first member of the Golf family to showcase revised front and rear end styling and interior upgrades that will be found throughout the rest of the Golf lineup.
New high efficiency LED head and tail lamps, reshaped bumpers, and more dynamic front and rear bodywork will set the e-Golf apart. Inside, the latest generation of Volkswagen's infotainment screens will deliver the utmost in functionality and in-car connectivity. A host of cold weather-related features will be standard for Canada.
The e-Golf can be recharged in one of three ways:
- by regular household outlet
- by a home or public Level 2 AC charging station
- by public Level 3 DC Fast Chargers, which can charge to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. As more of these stations are installed throughout Canada-including 200 supported by the Ontario government that should be in-place by March 31, 2017-e-Golf customers will be well-situated to take advantage.
The e-Golf will make its Canadian premiere at the Montréal Autoshow in January, at which time complete vehicle details will be made available.
