NEW YORK, July 11, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Dr. Iliyan Ivanov, Associate Professor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, has been selected to join the Education Board at the American Health Council. He will be sharing his knowledge and expertise in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Board Certified in both Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and General Psychiatry, through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Ivanov utilizes his expertise in the assessment and treatment of ADHD, childhood trauma, mood and anxiety disorders, adolescent and young adult substance use disorders in his role as a Medical Director of Acute Care at the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai Health System in New York City. In his current capacity, as an Associate Professor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai since 2015, his day-to-day responsibilities include 20% research, treating adolescents and adults with traumatic history, substance abuse, and evaluating/ treating children with ADHD and other behavioral problems.
Following graduation with his medical degree from the Higher Medical Institute Varna in 1990, Dr. Ivanov pursued a post-graduate residency at Mount Sinai Hospital and completed a residency at Maimonides Medical Center. He holds an Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certification and a Buprenorphine Treatment of Opioid Dependence by the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
As a testament to his success, Dr. Ivanov has been honored with the following awards: 2016 Outstanding Mentor Award by AACAP, 2016 Best Poster Presentation by APSARD, 2015 Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and 2014 New York Council Outstanding Leadership Award. Additionally, Dr. Ivanov has received recognition as the 2011-2012 Best Doctors, the 2010 NCDEU Young Investigators Award, 2009 Mount Sinai School of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award, 2009 American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Achievement Award, 2008 College on Problems of Drug Dependence Travel Fellowship Award, and 2008 National Institute on Research and Education, Young Investigators Colloquium Award.
Dr. Ivanov has authored over forty peer-review publications featured in The American Journal of Psychiatry, JAMA Psychiatry and the Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology. He contributes to the Kaplan and Sadock’s Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry and the Dulcan Textbook of Child Adolescent Psychiatry.
Garnering over two decades of psychiatry expertise, Dr. Ivanov pursued the field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry due to the conviction and belief that psychiatrists have the unique opportunity to work with patients during crucial stages of human development and to provide treatments that can have life-altering consequences. Additionally, child psychiatrists provide psychoeducation to patients and their families, thus reducing the stigma of mental illness and advocating for children's health locally and nationally.
Looking back, Dr. Ivanov attributes his success to having outstanding mentors and collaborating with renowned clinicians and researchers. To further his professional development, Dr. Ivanov maintains memberships with the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Society of Biological Psychiatry. He has also been a very active member of the Board of the New York Council on Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and has served as President of the Council from 2012 to 2014.
In his free time, he enjoys art, music, movies and literature. Dr. Ivanov writes original music and has performed for 15 years with an all-psychiatrists jazz band called “The Shrinks,” which he co-founded during his residency. Dr. Ivanov serves as a contributor and consultant for the Alternative Guitar Summit. He is also a member of the art collective Openings and has exhibited his art in independent and commercial galleries since he moved to New York in 1997.
Considering his professional future, Dr. Ivanov hopes to contribute to the growth the Child and Adolescent program at Mount Sinai and to secure research grant funding for new projects that can advance the field of child and adolescent psychiatry.
