Strada Education Network Commits $1 Million to Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Efforts

Support focuses on immediate and long-term recovery needs of victims, including aid to Houston-area students, colleges and workforce development programs

INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 06, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Strada Education NetworkSM, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving lives by strengthening the pathways between education and employment, today announced its commitment of $1 million to support Hurricane Harvey disaster relief efforts.

“We join the nation in expressing our heartbreak and deep concern over the devastating impact Hurricane Harvey has had in Texas and the surrounding region,” said William D. Hansen, Strada Education president and CEO.

“Our team has spent the past 10 days working closely with Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner; Juliet Stipeche, Director of Education for the City of Houston Mayor’s Office; and Tom Cochran, CEO and Executive Director for the U.S. Conference of Mayors, to determine where immediate and long-term support is needed. We are committed to working with local leaders and experts to best assist those impacted, including students attending area colleges and universities, now and in the months and years to come.”

Based on the dire need for basic emergency relief for residents and students as well as lost wages for underserved youth in local workforce programs, Strada Education Network will provide $925,000 to the Greater Houston Community Foundation’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund to help fund three key initiatives:

  • Support for displaced families in need of food, water, shelter and other basic needs
  • Relief assistance for matriculating students at impacted colleges and universities, to support their pursuit of completing their educational objectives
  • Support for City of Houston Youth Workforce Programs to engage in cleanup efforts over the next several months

In addition, Strada Education will provide $75,000 to Houston-based workforce development nonprofit Genesys Works, to support relief efforts and lost wages for program participants who have been unable to work and for staff members who have lost their homes.

Strada Education will also offer a 3-to-1 match for all donations made to these Greater Houston Community Foundation’s Hurricane Relief Fund efforts by the 700+ employees across the Network, including the parent organization and its operating companies: DXtera Institute, Education at Work, InsideTrack, Roadtrip Nation and Student Connections.

"Employees across Strada Education Network are committed to assisting residents and students impacted by this disastrous storm now and in the future as local teams determine the best path to support long-term recovery,” said Hansen. “We are heartened and humbled to offer our help alongside the many individuals and organizations who are joining together to lift up those who have been affected by this catastrophe.”
