CALGARY, Alberta, Nov. 15, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- How does affordable housing stay on the public and political radar with so many competing priorities in the public realm? Representatives from the sector are keenly aware they need to work to keep the issue of affordable housing at the forefront of the public agenda, especially when thousands of Calgarians are currently waiting for a place to call home.
Leaders, managers, and front-line staff of various non-profit, government and private housing groups will gather today to hear from keynote speaker, Abacus Data CEO, David Coletto, about his take on what the data shows is key to garnering ongoing public support for the issue of affordable housing. What needs to be done to ensure that affordable housing remains a priority in the minds of Calgarians?
National Housing Day is celebrated annually across Canada on November 22. The Opening Doors event is the 13th annual event held in Calgary to celebrate National Housing Day. This year’s one-day conference gathers non-profit, government and private housing providers together to learn from experts in a variety of fields from all over Alberta and Canada. The morning keynote speaker, Curtis Carmichael, will share his experiences of growing up in social housing in Regent Park in Toronto and how this motivated him to raise awareness of the issues of stigma and institutional racism by cycling across Canada. Breakout sessions will cover a variety of hands-on topics such as NIMBYism, energy efficiency, safe communication with residents in a digital age, transforming the business of affordable housing, harnessing strategic partnerships and more. Representatives from all three levels of government will also discuss their respective affordable housing strategies in a fireside chat.
“We’re excited to again be hosting our 13th annual event in Calgary to mark the National Housing Day,” says conference chair, Martina Jileckova. “Gathering leaders from the non-profit, government and private sector to discuss emerging trends, challenges and solutions is always a great opportunity for cross-sector collaboration and learning from one another – that’s exactly what the Opening Doors conference provides.”
The one-day conference takes place on Wednesday, November 15th from 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at The Carriage House Inn (9030 Macleod Trail South), Calgary.
Opening Doors is organized annually by a small but mighty group of representatives from the non-profit, government and private housing sector. The group understands the value this conference brings to its colleagues throughout the sector and works hard to deliver timely and relevant content.
