LONG BEACH, Calif., Dec. 07, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Last night, LINC Housing was honored with the fourth annual Hanley Award for Community Service in Sustainability from the Hanley Foundation and Hanley Wood. The award, with its $25,000 grant, recognizes community-based and non-profit organizations working to advance sustainability and environmental awareness. LINC's work is highlighted in the December issue of Hanley Wood's Builder magazine.
LINC Housing, one of California’s most productive nonprofit developers of affordable housing, is grounded in the realization that with the escalating price of land, certain segments of the population would be left behind with no hope to own or even rent a place to live: retired teachers and service sector personnel and young working families in both California’s urban and rural economies. The nonprofit’s properties are known for excellent design, outstanding management and life-enhancing services for its residents. Since 1984, LINC has helped create more than 7,800 homes in 76 communities throughout the state.
Michael J. Hanley, president of the Hanley Foundation and creator of the Hanley Award for Community Service in Sustainability, said he has long admired the work of LINC and its leadership’s commitment to providing sustainable yet affordable housing throughout California for people who are integral to communities – public employees, service sector employees, first responders, seniors, individuals with special needs, and the unemployed due to circumstances beyond their control.
“If we cannot provide well located, affordable and sustainable housing to the people who serve our communities, our communities can’t thrive and we are all negatively impacted” said Hanley. “LINC Housing is an astounding example of an organization committed to providing vital housing and related services to those who need it most and we are pleased to honor their work with The Hanley Award for Community Service in Sustainability.”
The Hanley Award for Community Service in Sustainability was presented alongside The Hanley Award for Vision and Leadership in Sustainability ($50,000) to this year’s recipient, William McDonough, at The Hanley Award Reception and Gala Dinner, on Dec. 6, 2017 in Los Angeles.
The Hanley Award for Community Service recognizes the efforts of organizations working within one of the following areas: 1) Providing housing that is affordable, sustainable and healthy; 2) expanding community awareness in sustainability and environmental issues through education and/or demonstration projects; 3) developing and advocating innovations in local and regional policies affecting sustainability; and 4) creating sustainable public buildings that advance community awareness.
"LINC Housing is honored to be recognized for our work to bring sustainable, vital housing and services to people who need it most,” said Rebecca Clark, president and CEO of LINC Housing. “The need for affordable housing has never been greater, and our team works tirelessly to fulfill our mission to build communities and strengthen neighborhoods for people underserved by the marketplace.”
Previous Hanley Award for Community Service in Sustainability recipients are Skid Row Housing Trust (2016) Chesapeake Bay Foundation (2015) and Make it Right Foundation (2014).
