Cause of the Increase in Heroin Addiction
Although heroin began gaining a foothold in inner cities in the 1980’s, it has grown over the last decade to penetrate even the most isolated suburban communities of the county. There are more than five times as many people addicted to heroin today than there were five years ago, with around 670,000 individuals addicted to heroin in the United States. There are more than twice as many people admitted in the emergency room for an overdose today than there were in 1999.
So what’s the reason for the dramatic increase in heroin addiction? Both medical professionals and professionals in the heroin addiction treatment industry speculate that it has something to do with the parallel increase in pharmaceutical opiate abuse. Many of these prescriptions have a similar structural make up as heroin, and like heroin, are synthesized from the opium poppy. Prescription medications like Oxycontin, Norco, Codeine, and Fentanyl are prescribed by a doctor to relieve pain, but are also abused by addicts for their euphoric effects. Addicts addicted to these prescription substances will either purchase them illegally on the streets, or manipulate a doctor into prescribing for them.
Many addicts that start out abusing prescription find that heroin produces similar effects, is cheaper and easier to get, and produces a stronger high. This results in a range of people who began using prescription medications, but end becoming hopelessly addicted to heroin. Although this is not the only avenue that leads to heroin addiction, many addiction professionals believe that this is the leading contributor to the increase in heroin use.
