Corrections Library Program gives used books a second chance to influence a life

ThriftBooks, the world largest online used bookstore, announced today a new program to benefit libraries in correctional facilities across the United States.

Seattle, WA, April 23, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ThriftBooks, the world largest online used bookstore, acquires books through public libraries and from local charities. Now ThriftBooks has expanded their business to offer these titles to correctional facilities in addition to their current consumer offering.

The ThriftBooks Corrections Library Program will offer high quality used books at up to 90% off new list prices.

“ThriftBooks provided good condition books at a fraction of the cost I was previously paying. They were attentive, and communication was handled quickly and professionally. Using the criteria we had for books, like no hardbacks, they were able to identify a range of titles and package them for delivery to our facility,” said Officer Hustead, King County Corrections, WA.

Access to reading materials and education is especially important because studies estimate that illiteracy rates in prison populations run as high as 75%.  Literacy New York reports that nearly 85% of juveniles who face trial are functionally illiterate, “underscoring the relationship between illiteracy and crime.”

“I am enthusiastic that this program will provide a way for correctional facilities to get more out of their library budget, and that prison populations will be positively impacted by our breadth of popular and educational titles,” said Susan Principe, the Channel Development Manager for ThriftBooks.
